Choosing a sink for sometimes be difficult, thankfully there are available in a variety of colours and materials, meaning there is a sink to fit every lifestyle and décor. Despite this, it is important to choose a sink which compliments your design, all the while being durable enough to provide functionality in the years to come. Here are some of the options at your disposal, including some pros and cons to each.
Choosing a sink: undermounted
Undermounted sinks are attached beneath the countertop, creating a flat surface. Undermounted sinks are perfect for those who want a sink which is easy to maintain and clean. Not only this, undermounted sinks do not take up extra space on your worktop, providing a streamlined and minimalist look. In order for an undermount sink to be effective however, you will need a countertop which is fully water resistant. This generally means accompanying undermounted sinks with quartz or granite.
Choosing a top mounted sink
Top mounted sinks are a popular choice among customers. Top mounted sinks are installed by lowering the basin into a pre-cut hole, with the edges of the worktop shown above the surface. Overmounted sinks are generally cheaper and easier to install in comparison to other sink types. Given that the sink is installed after worktop installation means that you are not limited in your choice of countertop. The obvious disadvantage with this type of sink is the exposed edge, however there is lots of variety in styles and materials meaning each customer can find a sink to their taste.
Choosing a Farmhouse sink
Farmhouse sinks, also known as apron- front sinks are deep, wide sinks which replace the front edge of the cabinetry, creating a decorative panel out of the sink design itself. Farmhouse sinks are perfect for washing large pots and pans, while also adding a classical countryside feel in your kitchen. If you would like a more modern look, there are some stainless steel and composite styles gaining in popularity. Another alternative is the Belfast sink, which as slightly narrower and deeper, often times being added in shaker style kitchens. If you decide upon a ceramic sink, note that they are heavy and difficult to install but they are also timeless and hard-wearing.
